Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel-based)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup red velvet cake crumbs (from cupcake centers)
  • 1/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 12 tbsp red food coloring (for glossy hue)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 34 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 23 tbsp milk or heavy cream
  • A few drops of ivory or peach food coloring (for skin-tone effect)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Candy fangs or small dots of red vegan gelling agent (for puncture marks)
  • Red syrup or edible red gel (for ‘blood’ drips)
  • Straws (not edible)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with paper liners.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, vanilla extract, and red food coloring.
  3. In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually mix dry ingredients with wet ingredients while alternating with buttermilk.
  4. Stir in baking soda mixed with vinegar. Fill muffin cups 2/3 full and bake for 18-20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before hollowing out centers for filling.
  6. Prepare the filling by mixing cake crumbs with sweetened condensed milk and melted butter; fill cupcakes generously.
  7. For frosting, beat softened butter, gradually adding powdered sugar and milk until smooth; tint as desired.
  8. Frost the cupcakes and create vampire bite decorations using candy fangs and drizzle red syrup for effect.
